How do heat pumps work?

Ebac and Vaillant heat pump: Get your heat pump installation

At Enerus Home Services, we specialise in designing and installing heat pumps that offer an efficient and environmentally-friendly way to heat and cool your home. But how exactly does a heat pump work?

A heat pump is an innovative system that transfers heat from one place to another. Unlike traditional heating systems that generate heat by burning fuel, heat pumps use electricity to move heat from the outside air, ground, or water into your home. Even in cold weather, there’s heat energy present in the air or ground, and a heat pump can extract that energy and transfer it inside.

Here’s How It Works:

  1. Absorbing Heat: The heat pump consists of an outdoor unit that absorbs heat from the outside environment. Even on chilly days, there is enough heat energy in the air or ground for the pump to extract.
  2. Compressing the Heat: Once the heat is absorbed, it passes through a refrigerant fluid inside the system. This fluid is then compressed, increasing its temperature and turning it into a hot gas.
  3. Transferring the Heat: The hot gas travels to an indoor unit where it releases the heat, warming your home through radiators, underfloor heating, or air vents.
  4. Repeating the Cycle: After releasing the heat, the refrigerant cools down, turns back into a liquid, and is ready to absorb more heat from the outside. This cycle continues, ensuring a constant, comfortable temperature inside your home.

Benefits of Heat Pumps

  • Energy-Efficient: Heat pumps use less electricity than traditional heating systems, lowering your energy bills.
  • Environmentally Friendly: They reduce your carbon footprint by using renewable energy sources.
  • Consistent Comfort: Enjoy a comfortable home all year round.

At Enerus Home Services, our expert team ensures that every heat pump system we design and install is perfectly suited to your home’s unique needs, providing you with optimal comfort and savings.

How much do heat pumps cost to run?

A standard 3 bedroom UK home will demand 12,000 kWh’s for heating.

Using a Coefficient of Performance (CoP) of 4.28, a heat pump will require 2,803 kWh’s of electricity to meet that demand.

If you are buying electricity at the current Ofgem price cap rate of 22.36 pence per kWh…

It’ll cost you around £627 to heat your home per year or £52 per month on average.
